Toyota has issued three separate recalls. One for a possible floor mat entrapment. A second for a potentially sticky gas pedal. The third recall is for 2010 Prius antilock brake system (ABS).
Floor Mat Recall
To address the risk of floor mat entrapment of accelerator pedals in certain Toyota models, Toyota is conducting a safety recall of those models. It also issued a consumer safety advisory on September 29, 2009 with respect to this issue.
Vehicles involved in the floor mat recall include:
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- 2007-2010 Camry
- 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2008-2010 Highlander
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2004-2009 Prius
- 2005-2010 Tacoma
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2009-2010 VENZA
* Owners of vehicles covered by the floor mat recall should take out any removable driver's floor mat and not replace it with any other floor mat until they receive the vehicle-based remedy.
To fix the issue:
- the shape of the accelerator pedal will be reconfigured to address the risk of floor mat entrapment. For the Camry and Avalon models involved, the shape of the floor surface underneath will also be reconfigured to increase the space between the accelerator and pedal and the floor.
- Vehicles with any genuine Toyota accessory all-weather floor mat will be provided with newly-designed replacement driver - and front passenger-side all-weather floor mats.
- In addition, as a separate measure independent of the vehicle-based remedy, Toyota will install a brake override system onto the involved Toyota Camry and Avalon IS 350 and IS 250 models as an extra measure of confidence. This system cuts engine power in case of simultaneous application of both the accelerator and brake pedals.
Accelerator Pedal Recall:
The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper “feel” by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable. This friction device includes a “shoe” that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation. Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly. In some cases, friction could increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open.
Vehicles involved in the pedal recall include:
* Highlander hybrids and Camry hybrids are not involved in this action and will remain for sale.
* Camry, RAV4, Corolla and Highlander vehicles with VINs that begin with "J" are not involved.
1. What is the solution Toyota announced to fix sticking accelerator pedals?
Toyota’s engineers have developed and rigorously tested a solution that is both effective and simple. A precision-cut steel reinforcement bar will be installed into the accelerator pedal assembly, thereby eliminating the excess friction that has caused pedals to stick in rare instances.
2010 Prius Voluntary Brake Recall
The recall is to update software in the vehicle's antilock brake system (ABS).
Vehicles involved in the floor mat recall include:
* Only Prius vehicles produced since May 2009 are subject to this recall
* First- and second-generation Prius vehicles use a different ABS system and are not involved in the campaign.
Toyota has responded to owner concerns with a running production change for 2010 Prius that was introduced January 2010, improving the ABS system's response time, as well as the system's overall sensitivity to tire slippage.
More Information:
The recall will allow Toyota City to perform the software update on 2010 Prius vehicles sold prior to this running production change.
